Gas Prices and Measuring Internet Sensitivity
Friday, August 08, 2008
The New York Times -- Bill Tancer, the general manager of Hitwise and author of Click: What Millions of People Are Doing Online and Why it Matters, blogged here earlier this week about Internet trends and data. This is the second of three posts on the subject.

One of the things that I’ve learned from monitoring the Hitwise aggregate search behavior of 10 million Internet users in the U.S. is that, as a group, we have a remarkably short attention span.

Take any big newsworthy event, if gore or nudity is not at play in the story; expect the spike in Internet searches and resulting site visits on that event to last no more than one week. Rising gas prices are no exception — until recently.

To sell newspapers, the publishers must have interesting news. When there is a lack of this type of news, the publishers and writers must generate it. This practice has become far more common recently, and this is a perfect example of this tactic.

The high cost of fuel affects everyone - the rich get richer off the stocks and the poor can't even afford to go to work half the time. By Thursdays some workers are calling in the "empty gas tank" excuse now. That just cuts their check the next week. The cycle needs to stop before the higher wage earners are the only ones working. (And you know that will raise prices!)

as a voting public, we have a remarkably short attention span!

I agree.

Remember when the house and senate went on their break recently. The Republicans stayed, the Democratrs left. The Reps, tried to get the Dems to stay to work on energy. The Dems DIDN'T want to.

So, the Dems basically said to h3ll with us.

Will you remember this on election day?

I agree with American's short attention span, but I won't soon forget paying over $4.50 for a gallon of gas. I still intend to conserve while driving and support efforts to find and utilize alternative energy.

DrCashFlow; ypur post was most interesting and correct. I have attended more wasted time meetings in three career fields thwn good ones. I used to call them "meetings to have meetings" or "meetings to prove the boss is in control".

"Finding the best price is becoming a necessity for households on fixed incomes"--if more people thought about finding the best price for things maybe we'd have a more "sensible" economy.

Responding to John Ley @ 3:09 am and his potential doomsday scenario, I think current global oil production is about 84 million barrels per day (not 74), of which the U.S. consumes almost 25%. Meanwhile, his arguments about crumbling infrastructure over time may or may not finally force corporate America to dial back on its bureaucratic ways and lead to an even more pronounced level of home telecommuting. Advances in audio and video technology are making teleconferencing higher quality and easier. And frankly, this country would be a lot more productive if often useless meetings held by insecure and/or power hungry managers were cut by 80-90%.
